The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon does an outstanding job of recreating the spirit and atmosphere of their world. It features outstanding animation, enthusiastic voice acting and an upbeat soundtrack; as its characters tease and annoy each other with humor that resonates with teens (and parents!). Reporter April O’Neil stands out for being neither sexualized nor objectified like many live action versions have.

However, this adaptation falls short in several areas. First of all, it’s too violent; for instance, Midnight’s assassin cares nothing about collateral damage while killing off many innocent civilians in his path. There’s even an odd scene with the turtles using smoke bombs to mislead a giant mutant alligator into thinking they are invading his territory, something not often done in movies or comics.

There are also some highly offensive lines in this cartoon, like Michelangelo joking that he has an attraction for April’s tits. It’s disheartening that filmmakers would suggest inter-species erotica for characters from a cartoon about teenage mutant turtles who fight crime in New York City subway systems.
