According to research by security firm Sensity, nonconsensual porn abuse has increased on Telegram messaging app globally used throughout the world.

Sensity researchers discovered a deepfake ecosystem on Telegram last year, using bots to generate nude renderings from photographs sent directly to them. Their estimate suggests over 104,000 nudes have been generated and shared within affiliated channels; but likely far higher numbers exist. To use the service, users simply text photos directly to a bot which then returns an unclothed version and compiles galleries of them.

Researchers reported the bots to Telegram, who has since October blocked access on iPhones and iPads due to violations of Apple’s App Store rules. But their users still find ways to circumvent Telegram’s blocking systems; Sensity’s Patrini has identified several Italian language bots with similar functionality, according to The Verge report, while Italy’s data protection watchdog has opened an investigation against Telegram.
