How to Prevent NSFW Teen Discord
Discord is one of the more troubling apps for teens when it comes to private communication apps. While targeted at children and teenagers, its users include adults who can freely interact with those under 18 – such as engaging in sexual exploitation of children. Indeed, National Child Maltreatment Education Center named Discord to its 2021 Dirty Dozen list due to its role in disseminating child sexual abuse material.
Discord has taken steps to strengthen its safety protocols, such as partnering with ConnectSafely and conducting listening sessions with parents. Furthermore, more account controls such as blocking offensive users or restricting explicit content have been introduced through the Discord Safety Center – though abuse remains difficult due to moderation being performed at server level where groups often have differing standards for moderating such material.
Encourage your teen to be wary of servers they didn’t request or know anything about and with low membership (a sure sign of inadequate moderation). They should reject friend requests from people they don’t recognize and report bullying or adult content sharing to server owners immediately – with assurances that reporting issues won’t get them into trouble or cause them to lose access to an app.
Arrange a check-in meeting to review their Discord activity, sharing friends and direct messages with you. Teaching children online safety can be hard; to help protect them better you could help create an emergency plan in case anything seems unsafe online.
