Sexting Scandals in Schools Everyday brings news of yet another sexting scandal at schools around the country, leaving parents and educators concerned. Teen boys sharing explicit images with multiple people including strangers online may face criminal sexting charges in extreme cases.

An incident that garnered national media coverage involved a 14-year-old boy, police claim, who used Facebook posing as female to coerce other students into sending him sexual content, which he then shared with numerous students and adults in Davis County, Pennsylvania. Police charged this individual with extortion, transmission of pornographic material and solicitation charges.

Researchers conducted a recent study comparing sexting practices between teenage girls and boys. Their researchers discovered that teenage boys were twice as likely to share explicit images beyond its intended audience, and more likely than girls to receive unasked-for sexual photos from peers.

Research showed that cis-heteronormative homosocial masculinity and class habitus had a direct impact on how teenagers exchange sexually explicit photos among themselves. Boys interviewed in this study described their dick pic practices with humor but were unaware that such behavior could constitute digital sexual harassment or cyber flashing; suggesting societal norms of male victimhood and female victimhood have yet to reach young teens, making it hard for them to identify when an image goes too far.
