Mel was raised in a community where sexuality was stigmatized and secreted away, so as an adult she found empowerment and healing by teaching others about comprehensive sex education, consent, and social justice issues. Additionally, she found strength by joining other survivors through Take Back the Night and PAVSA.

FBI Officials have noted an upsurge in financially motivated sextortion schemes aimed at teens. Predators exploit them into exchanging sexually explicit material by either pretending they possess it themselves or convincing them they do; Mel is one such victim.

An 18-year-old victim of sexual exploitation who was forbidden from communicating with 10 men has recently revealed she is pregnant, following an order by the High Court judge lifting an anonymity ban placed upon her identity despite opposition from lawyers representing her as well as Birmingham City Council which expressed fear that publicizing it would cause her distress.
