Teen First Sex Stories

For many teenagers, experiencing their first sexual encounter is an exciting milestone. While romantic fantasies often outshone reality during this exciting experience, their first experience may differ somewhat than anticipated.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), most Americans lose their virginity around age 17. But it’s important to keep in mind that everyone’s first time is unique – whether smooth and exciting or messy and awkward.

Most participants reported having intimate sexual experiences with female partners they knew well, most often spontaneous or “just happened”. Alcohol or drug consumption were rarely mentioned.

This qualitative research examined narratives of first sex among 14-16 year-old young men recruited from a primary care clinic serving low income neighborhoods in Indianapolis, Indiana. Participants were interviewed by a trained interviewer and asked to share information regarding relationships, sexual experiences and thoughts during an in-depth interview. Interviews were recorded and transcribed before data analysis using thematic analysis took place.

We found that the dominant narrative of first sex consisted of three parts: preparation, the sexual event itself and aftercare. This finding aligns with previous research on adolescent sexual experiences as well as studies focusing on close friends’ roles in conceptualising and socially constructing sexual roles and behaviours (Morgan and Zurbriggen 2007; Upadhyay, Hindin and Gultiano 2006). Our findings also contribute to research about how adolescents communicate about sexual matters (Cooksey and Mott 2002).
